There is so much that we want to provide for our beloved furry friends. We are constantly buying toys, grooming goodies, snacks, food, beds, etc. Unfortunately, given that there are millions of pets around the world and that many of these items contain plastic, our animals are a major source of pollution. There are ways though, to buy everything your heart desires for you pup or cat without plastic and here we will give you a few helpful tips to lead you in the right direction in avoiding the landfill.
The ins-and-outs of pet poo
According to the RSPCA, there are an estimated 29 million pets in Australia. In the United States, it’s estimated that 78 million dogs and 85.8 million cats are owned. They may be cute, they also poop and unfortunately, most doggy-poop bags are made of plastic, all of which usually ends up in landfill.1 There are a number of ways to ensure that this unavoidable waste is sorted without it taking forever to rot in the rubbish. Not all poop bags are created equal when it comes to sustainability. If you choose to use ones made of plastic then the contents will take years, if not decades, to break down. Luckily there are many companies that have taken the initiative to manufacture options made of things like cornstarch that will decompose much faster. Simply ask around at the dog park, look online or enquire at the pet store as to the best options available in your area.
If you are a bit more of a hearty pet owner, not afraid of going the extra mile, then consider a reusable container. Once you are home you can empty the contents into your toilet and wave it goodbye. Give the box a good rinse and voila’ guilt free poo disposal! If that would make you too queasy then you can also use options like paper lunch sacks which will also decompose quicker than plastic bags. When it comes to kitty litter there are natural options such as If you’ve got a cat. Choose natural cat litter made from paper and cardboard, recycled paper, or wood shavings. You can also make cat litter yourself by shredding old newspapers. Finally, see if there may be a pet waste disposal service if you really want to be a poo star! These businesses take your animal’s “business” and turn it into things like compost though it may cost you a bit of money a month.
Plastic free playtime
There is so much available in the marketplace these days made from recycled materials that can take the place of freshly manufactured plastic toys. Retailers recognised some time ago that owners will pay more for items that are more environmentally responsible. Look for toy labels that identify the use of recycled or sustainably sourced material such as organic cotton. Natural rubber, canvas, wood, bamboo, or wool are also great components to look for too.
Feeling crafty? Make your own rope toys out of old t-shirts or towels that will give your pet hours of fun! You can also get out your sewing machine and make plushy toys out of cloth that may otherwise end up in the garbage dump. If you do opt for plastic or rubber options, then don’t go with the cheapest versions out there and go with quality instead of quantity. Pets, especially puppies, can chew through poorly made plastic or rubber and even accidentally ingest it which could make them sick or even land them at the vet. Brands like Kong are durable enough to last through months of nibbles and throws.
Feel good about plastic free grooming
Even the chicest and fanciest of pooches will need a good bath now and then and pet store isles are lined with plastic bottles filled with pup shampoo. These massive containers can be a huge source of plastic waste and there are ways to avoid them. Just like humans there are shampoo bar options that contain much better ingredients without the extra packaging. Do be careful about ones that have essential oils inside as some pets can have reactions. Quality brushes made of things like bamboo and boar hair will keep coats shiny without any unnatural bits.
A Plastic free bed to lay their furry head
The internet is filled with photos of dogs looking guilty next to a bed they have shredded. While these pics are good for a giggle the waste made is a shame. Again, this is where you want to look at quality and durability by reading online reviews first before you purchase. Make sure it has a rewashable cover so when dirty paws make their mark you can just toss the cover in the washer and its good as new! Materials matter too so look for a bed made of things like hemp or organic cotton, or repurposed, or recycled fabric.
Plastic free Pet daily care
Avoid plastic food and water bowls as these can leak plastic and chemicals into what your pet consumes. Instead choose ceramic or metal versions which will last longer and won’t hurt your cat or dog. When it comes to leashes and collars you can find cute and sustainable options everywhere made of everything from recycled tires to hemp that will last ages. Going green with their garb does not mean that they have to sacrifice even a little bit of style!
So, there you have it! The many ways to avoid plastic as a pet owner with very little time or effort. Tell your canine or kitty we said “hi”!
